THIRTEENTH ANNUAL “PURE NORTHERN MICHIGAN” JURIED PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION
The Charlevoix Photography Club, Inc. (CPC), in cooperation with the Charlevoix Circle of Arts and the support of Charlevoix Auto is pleased to accept submissions for its Thirteenth Annual Juried Photography Exhibition entitled “Pure Northern Michigan”. The dates for the exhibition are Friday June 3rd through Saturday June 18, 2022 at the Charlevoix Circle of Arts located at 109 Clinton Street, Charlevoix, Michigan. The hours are from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, closed Sunday. The hours for Friday, June 3rd are extended to 7:00 p.m.
The Charlevoix Photography Club wishes to honor the founder of the club Mike Schlitt for his contributions, instructions and mentoring to so many of us. Mike and his wife Denise have moved to South Carolina to be closer to their children and grandchildren. They will be missed. We wish them the very best in their future adventures.
Juror
Steve Jessmore is a 30-year photojournalist, five-time Michigan Photographer of the Year, Robert F. Kennedy Photojournalism awardee and former Chief Photographer of the Flint Journal, the Saginaw News and the Myrtle Beach (SC) Sun News. He’s won numerous other Michigan, national and international photojournalism awards primarily focused on community journalism and storytelling. In August of 2018 he stepped away from his position as photographer for Central Michigan University, got married and moved to Grand Rapids and began freelancing full time with a focus on higher education.
In 2020, with work cancelled due to Covid, Jessmore started a new photographic journey. He discovered a passion to learn to photograph wildlife, especially the birds along the Torch River from his kayak. In 2021, two of his bird images swept the professional division of the National 2021 Audubon Photography contest, winning 1st and HM. He regularly spends his days off in this pursuit dedicating at least one day a week to getting better.
In keeping with the Pure Northern Michigan theme, all photographic images should be of subjects taken in Northern Michigan, excluding the category “Non-Michigan Travel”. The exhibition is open to all current members of the Charlevoix Photography Club and others who wish to participate (excluding professional photographers). There are no limitations as to when or where in Northern Michigan the photographs were taken. Cash prizes will be given for first, second and third place images in each of the six categories. The juror will also select, at his discretion, images deemed appropriate for Honorable Mention.
A distinguishing feature of the CPC Exhibition is that all accepted entries are juried while hanging in the exhibition hall. To enter the Exhibition, ready to hang art must be brought to the Circle of Arts and the submission process completed on Thursday, May 26th from 3:00 -5:00 p.m. or Friday, May 27th from 1:00-3:00 p.m.
An opening reception will be held on Friday, June 3rd from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Awards will be announced at this time.
*This event is subject to change due to COVID-19 mitigation protocols and MDHHS emergency orders.
